African textured hair comes in a few varieties of textures from about 3c to 4b and some even have various textures on the same head.  3c is a semi-tight spiral with a relatively thin cuticle.  4a is a "clickpen" spring sized spiral, but 4b is about a 3 to 5mm zigzag.  Both of the 4's have a super-thin cuticle layer though.  4b is the worst for dry and shaggy looking rows because it'll stand out like a porcupine.  So the answer either way is consistent very gentle care.  Type 3c and 4 hair breaks very easily.

If you can imagine parting a long section of hair, starting a braid with a subsection of it and continuing it, but picking up hair as you go along the section, then that's basically it.

Cornrows.co.uk began as a section of my website, which was hosted on a free webpage service at Anzwers.org.  I began writing about African hairstyles in 1996, and by 2000 or so, when I got my own domain, it was still a part of my personal site until the community got too big and specific for that.  Then it became a section of ModernTraditional.com, a site dedicated to reviving interest in traditional art, fashion, and customs, with a modern practicality and edge.  I was already teaching an online course in spiritual counseling at UniversalClass.com, so I started an online course in African hairstyling too.

When it seemed the logical next step, I finally registered cornrows.co.uk and cornrows.us and created a specific site.  The main question I'm asked by fellow professionals is:

Why in the H@$#!& did you put instructions for cornrows on the net for FREE???

During times when our hair needs to "rest" from braiding or we need protection from dust, a headwrap can be very handy.  Here are some instructions with illustrations for an easy and secure headwrap.  You'd see this one alot in the summer months in the Mediterranean and in orthodox communities year round.
